So for
my WP3 I’m planning to use video games my topic. The academic article I am
planning to use as the basis for my two transformed genres is, Action video gaming and cognitive control: playing first person
shooter games is associated with improvement in working
memory but not action inhibition. For
my genre transformation for the younger audience I plan on doing a video game
article. This would be an article you would see in a magazine like Gameinformer
or a website like IGN. For my older audience I intend to do a Reddit post of
the pro and cons of video games.
In
my video game article, I intend for it to be like a descriptive review of the
games content. For example, the graphics, gameplay mechanics, multiplayer and
campaign mode. The tie-in with the the scholarly article I am intending to use
are the video games mentioned in the article as well as the idea that playing
FPS games helps working memory. For example, “Your parents may tell you that
your killing your brain playing this but really your improving your memory
because how else will you remember how to destroy noobs.” It won’t be extremely
long because most video game articles are usually around four to six pages
long. Sometimes they are longer but that will take a greater amount of time. I’ll
also most likely include humor within it as well since most video game articles
use humor as a way to keep readers interested. I also plan to include pictures
throughout my piece. Since this is towards a younger audience they need things
to keep their attention since it is easily lost. Me including pictures would
keep their attention and also it would give them an actual picture of what I’m
writing about.
For
the older audience, I am still deciding between either doing a Reddit post or a
newspaper article. Both will allow me to write about the pros and cons of video
games when it comes to children. I will make it how they affect children since
it will act like a hook since most kids play video games these days and parents
want to know how it affects them. It will probably three pros and 3 cons of the
biggest effects. This keeps the piece short and sweet but also informative. The
tie-in with the scholarly article I am planning to use is that one of the pro’s
of FPS video games is that it improves working memory and doesn’t inhibit other
actions. Working memory is an important process for reasoning, comprehension,
learning, and memory updating. Once parents hear that playing FPS video games
may help improve their child’s learning they’ll be surprised but possibly more
lenient with their children. I will probably include a few graphics just so
parent’s can have a visual representation of what I am saying as well as giving
support to what I am saying. This also reduces the amount of reading a reader
would have to do so they would be more likely to read the entire piece of just
a small part of it.
So that’s
currently my plan for WP3. Hopefully it goes well because it is going to take
some time. It would seem easy but most of the stuff we read in magazines and
others sources are written by professional writers and they take a long time
writing even if it is a small piece.

I think what sounds really cool about your topic is that you seem to really have a lot of enthusiasm about video games which is going to make it easier for you to write about them. The academic article you chose very clearly relates to your overall topic and it is easy to understand the connections. I'm just wondering exactly what ages are the articles intended for because people play video games throughout many different stages in their life. I personally am not familiar with the age groups that read video game magazines or articles, so some clarification would allow for the reader to understand more clearly. Similarly, for the Reddit post, I'm not exactly sure the core audience of Reddit is parents. Reddit seems to be for people in their late teens and twenties. However, if you were specific with your age group, it would probably be easier to understand why you choose a Reddit post. I think you are going to have a good WP#3.

ReplyDeleteYour idea is very interesting. A video game article is hard to apply to both age groups sine video games are primarily only played by the younger generation. If you plan to use a gaming article you are limiting the audience of your younger generation though. This is because I don’t imagine any 10 (let’s be honest, a lot of CoD players are very young) year olds reading an article. Unless you are aiming for the older sect of gamers such as 14-18 year olds, which would be fine too. Your second idea of using a Reddit post might work, but I don’t know of many adults who go on Reddit. So maybe News broadcast from like Fox 11 might be another cool idea. Overall I like your idea and you seem pretty confident with talking about it, so I say give it a go and it will probably be an amazing WP3.
I think it's great that you're choosing a topic that you really like. I think it's a good topic since all age ranges play video games. For the game review and from the example you gave, I assume you will using a very informal tone--almost a conversational tone? Is there such thing as too informal when it comes to this genre? How will you determine where to draw the line? Also, what parts of the scholarly article are going to be included in this review? Reviews are specific to each video game, but I think you could make this transformation really good if you chose the most important factors from the scholarly article. I love your idea of Reddit! Do you plan on mimicking the Reddit post exactly and making up usernames? I look forward to seeing what you come up with!
ReplyDeleteI-G,
ReplyDeleteI’m really liking this idea. It sounds cool, and I bet that you’ll have fun with it. The video game article/review (for a younger audience) is tailor-made for this project.
One big question I want you to consider is: who are you going to be as a reviewer? What kind of reviewer CHARACTER are you going to adopt? What kind of stance will you have? Will you be objective or will you be more opinionated? Either is fine, as long as you’re proactively and intentionally approaching this genre with these considerations in mind. (Some other qs: what counts as “evidence” in these sorts of reviews? Do they reference other video games or reviewers/writers, and why or why not?) Also, most importantly: how does this review relate back to the original genre that you’re transforming?
Apply that last question to your pros/cons idea and you should be good to go!
