Question 1.
- A move I noticed across all the videos is that each artist described what type of tool they were going to use be it a scraping knife or a brush.
- They also described what type of paint or compound they were using to paint or draw. One used oil paint and lighter fluid and the other used charcoal.
- They also pointed out what parts they were going to paint and how they were going to do it.
Question 2.
- The artist describe they are doing by pointing out what they are going to paint and why that part stood out to them. The artists also refer back to the object they are painting. LIke with the disney artists, they keep on looking back to the tree they are trying to capture. They talk about the structure of the painting be it the mountain and trees in Bob Ross’ painting or the tree with the disney artists. The artists also direct attention to their style of painting something. They point out their preference in interpreting the tree.
Question 3.
- Bob Ross tends to use a style that revolves around using common techniques mixed with his own techniques so it is easy to talk about. This impacts me in that I feel that I could follow his techniques while painting. He describes how he does everything and then shows what happens if you make a mistake. Bob Ross portrays his subject matter as something you would see in real life. Like the haziness of the mountain or the outline of distant trees.
- The disney artists style revolves around putting the best parts of each other’s paintings and drawing into one masterpiece. They compile them in order to get the best of the best. It also revolves around tying in their paintings into the era of the movie they are animating. Their style affects me in the way that I can see how different ideas can be put together to form one work of art. The disney artists portray their subject matter (the tree) as a living, breathing thing. Another portrays as a sturdy structure. Another as a bony thing that just springs out of the ground.

I also noticed how important the choice of tool and material they chose to paint with was. I think it's cool that you noticed how much the artists referred back to the subject of their paintings. Bob Ross wasn't even working off of an image. So you can see the great difference between their styles.

ReplyDeleteOh my god, first of all that meme made me literally laugh out loud. I appreciate that. Also good point that the disney artists refer back the the actual object they are painting a lot. Bob Ross is more just painting his idea of trees rather than a literal tree that he is looking at with his eyeballs. Also totally agree that bob ross has more common techniques than the disney artists.
Good observations on the different moves the artists used. I also really liked what you said about how the artists direct our attention to their style and their preference when painting. It is important to understand someone's intentions so that we can better understand why they have the style they do. Also, good job on differentiating the two different styles.
ReplyDeleteP.S.- Your memes are fantastic, man.
