Thlog #1

Well this was my first full week of college. Our first assignment was to write something about me and then post to my blog that we had to set up. I thought it was easy at first because you are literally speaking about yourself but once I started typing I ran into some blocks. Such as what I wanted to put abut my self and if people would think differently about me. However, I got over it and just wrote about myself since that’s what is all about. I really enjoyed reading Navigating Genres by Kerry Dirk. It gave me a better understanding of what exactly is a genre. He gave an example were three pieces of writing that fell under the same genre can be very different from one another. It also showed that while one does not necessarily need to follow the common conventions of a genre completely ignoring them can lead to a very bad piece of writing in a specific genre. I enjoyed learning about genre’s while in class because we used common genre’s that many of us have seen like horror movie’s or even country music. Learning about genre’s this way allows us to become more comfortable with them since we are using examples we already know about. For example, some of the conventions of horror movies include that it is set in a secluded place, it is usually dark, and the music is usually tense and building. This is just some of what I learned and did during my first week in writing 2.
